Rocket Fuel -Leaning on a Friend

Today’s Rocket Fuel is about leaning on a friend for support when you’re down. I want you to imagine this situation:

Although you have demonstrated success in the past, you are definitely struggling now and you’re having a tough time in the business. You decide to turn to a friend for advice and support.

They start by telling you, you are a failure, and you don't have what it takes to succeed. They go on to point out your weaknesses and dwell on those. Then they switch gears and tell you, you should consider changing careers.

Sound ludicrous? Of course it does. What kind of friend would do that?

Now imagine the friend you are talking to is the one in your head; that’s right, that voice that’s with you 24 hours a day.

The truth is, sometimes we are very tough on ourselves. We might focus on our failures instead of our successes. Perhaps we would dwell on our weaknesses instead of our strengths. We might tell ourselves that we don't have what it takes to be successful and look for different career options.

We really need to talk to ourselves like we would talk to a best friend that has reached out in a downtime. We must give ourselves positive self-talk to boost our self-confidence and self-worth.

Some might say this can be difficult to do when you're not feeling up. Ask yourself though, if you can control what you tell a best friend when they reach out when they’re feeling down, (regardless of how you are feeling), is it not reasonable to assume that we can control what we are telling ourselves?

So, the next time a glum face is staring back at you in the mirror, think of this person as your best friend and tell them exactly what they need and deserve to hear!

Note: If you’re truly suffering from serious mental health issues, open up to people in your circles for support and reach out for professional help. You are not alone.
